This presentation reports on findings from a group study of 31 children with bilingual input from birth who were studied at ages 13 and 20 months using a parent report instrument, the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory (CDI). Findings are reported on children's vocabulary size (also in comparison with a group of matched monolinguals), their understanding of translation equivalents, the relation between comprehension and production, and the relation between both language (so-called balance patterns). These findings all show up wide inter- and intra-individual variation and a greater or similar word knowledge in comparison with monolinguals. Implications are discussed.
