Linguistics Colloquium Series: Dr. Karyn Mallett
Practicing Applied Linguistics at the Institutional Level
Thursday, February 10, 2011 2:20 PM to 4:00 PM EST
SUB II Room 3
Practicing applied linguistics requires the navigation of situated, dynamic social constructs in order to engage with perceived real-world, language-related problems and their environments. In this presentation, Dr. Karyn Mallett provides an overview of the field of applied linguistics—beyond classroom ESL instruction—in order to contextualize her involvement with and research on campus-wide internationalization initiatives at George Mason. Discussion hits on a variety of common topics in applied linguistics work and research, including: language proficiency assessment, language policy and planning, language ideology, L2 writing, language program administration, SLA pedagogy, and more.
