(Fall 2025)

Section Information for Fall 2025

In this course, we will be reading about forced alignment, a process by which a transcription is matched with where it occurs in an audio file. This kind of tool is of great use in experimental phonetics and phonology to automate certain aspects of manual annotation. It also connects strongly with computational linguistics while also serving as a testbed for certain theories and ideas in phonetics and phonology about speech signal segmentation and categories. Many papers that we read will be selected by students, and there will be a mix of both theory and practical application.
