Polysynthesis

Large portions of syntactic theory are based on data from languages more or less like English or Latin—languages that lie somewhere on the path between analytic and synthetic. The amount of within-word morphology and agreement displayed by these languages is minimal when compared to what have been termed polysynthetic languages, which exhibit large amounts of bound morphology and phenomena such as noun incorporation. In this seminar we will read and discuss major works on the syntax of polysynthetic languages, and explore the puzzles these languages present for theories of syntax, morphology, typology, and more.
