Section Information for Fall 2020
Course topic: Optionality across linguistic systems
Course Description:
It’s there, except when it’s not. What does it mean for something to be optional in a language? This course will look at various instances of optionality across languages and linguistic domains. Based on an in-depth literature review of the notion of optionality, students will develop their own study of optionality in a linguistic subsystem of their choice, either investigating the phenomenon in one particular language or adopting a comparative or typological approach.
Evaluation:
Students will have to complete four assignments: one in-class paper review, one in-class presentation on original scholarship related to the course topic, one paper abstract, and one final paper. In order to be counted towards LING 886 or LING 890 requirements, final papers will have to comprise a special focus on syntax (886) or phonology (890) respectively.
LING 890 DL1 is a distance education section.
